Come see some art!
We’re in the final stretch now, and soon this huge piece will be up in Sheffield Train Station for everyone to see, so here are the details…
Over the Christmas period I’ve been working to get the piece all prepared ready to be sent over to the Train Station, this has meant building a frame for the piece to go on!
When I started working on the commission I wasn’t sure how it would actually go up in the space.
Here is a photo of where it will be in a few weeks (with measurements of the space)
The 183cm x 206cm space is where the artwork will be!
There are some issues we immediately ran into with this space. Sheffield Train Station is a Grade II listed building, which means that artwork cannot be fixed to walls, floors or ceilings in a way that alters the surface. As I worked on the piece more, the weight of the fabric was getting more and more. In early talks with the Artworks Together team, we thought it would work well as a hanging tapestry but because of all of the different techniques used, it warps and wouldn’t lay flat against the wall.
We then spoke with the great Martyn, a Station Servicing Technician at East Midlands Railway who is helping to put the artwork up in the Station, who let us know that the beam above the square space allows us to hang a frame from it. This was great news as we weren’t sure this would be possible with the restrictions of the listed building!
So…Then it was time to build the frame! In theory I could have bought something, but at this size it would have been quite expensive. So off to B&Q we went and bought some supplies. A few days and many grunts later…
The frame design was based on what a traditional canvas would be, but with some extra support. Each corner has a bracket to make sure it’s stable despite the large size and it has ended up really secure.
It was then time to attach the fabric to the frame by stretching it over, just like a canvas! (But I’m not showing this until the reveal)
Details of the Unveiling!
Come along and see the piece in person from Friday 16th January!
We will be holding a small unveiling event on the 16th at 11am, I’ll be there answering any questions you may have!
Here are details of where we will be inside the station:
